The Jurassic Coast is a 95 mile length of the south coast of England. Awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2001, the area connects the coast with the broader countryside and its social and cultural heritage. The fossils found in the area, and the coastal geomorphologic features of this dynamic coast, have advanced the study of earth sciences for more than two hundred years, and lent the name Jurassic to an entire geological period.
Surface Impression was engaged by the Jurassic Coast Partnership (JCP) to consult with the museums in the World Heritage Site area to draw up a plan to help them achieve their goal to transform the museums’ digital presence. We approached this task from two ‘ends’ – firstly with research into the museums’ current capabilities and offer, and secondly with research into their digital audiences.
The three museums that were fundraising for development, Bridport Museum, Lyme Regis Museum and Dorset County Museum, all successfully applied for Heritage Lottery Fund grants totalling £13 million ($20 million CAD), and were able to begin implementing the strategy.
