The shape of remembrance after the First World War

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and Surface Impression created Shaping Our Sorrow, an online exhibition exploring the story of remembrance. Shaping Our Sorrow is the history of the processes put in place to bury and subsequently memorialize the dead of WWI. It is also a journey through the emotions of grief and loss, with personal stories illustrated by photos, letters and articles from the CWCG’s collection. CWGC is an international foundation that honours the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in WWI and WWII, ensuring that they will never be forgotten.

Surface Impression designed and built a vibrant and dynamic interface, that is respectful of the subject matter and aligns with the CWGC corporate brand. The high-performing and visually pleasing website incorporates an online exhibition, with an efficient and engaging architecture. The aim is to facilitate organic navigation through the content that encourages audiences to extend their exploration of this extensive resource of war history.
